Toronto Employment and Labour Law Blog: Can you be fired for no reason?

Yes. As long as your employer lives up to its legal obligations to you to provide notice and severance, no reason need to be given for the termination of your employment without cause. If you are fired for justifiable cause, that is fraud, serious workplace misconduct or incompetence after warnings of your failures, the courts require the employer to provide the reason for termination with cause so that the terminated employee is able to react, if necessary, with a lawsuit that denies that cause exists. If the employee is terminated with cause the employer provides no notice or severance.

On the other hand, when employment is terminated without cause the minimum entitlements for severance and notice are triggered under the Ontario Employment Standard Act.  In addition, money may be owing to the terminated employee under contract or, if there is no contract, under the common law.
